Yaocheng J. Yu 

About

YAOCHENG YU earned her bachelors degree at Northwestern University and her masters degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music on scholarship. Her principal teachers were Timothy Day, Walfrid Kujala, Jill Felber, and Karen Gifford. Throughout her career she has won multiple awards as a flutist. She was the San Francisco Conservatory concerto competition winner and performed the Ibert Concerto with the orchestra. She was a finalist at the Frank Bowen Competition, and she was a recipient of the Belle T. Ritchie Award. She has attended highly competitive summer programs such as the National Repertory Orchestra in Breckenridge Colorado. and the Colorado College Summer Music Festival in Colorado Springs Colorado. She also served as finalists for both the New World Symphony and Civic Orchestra of Chicago,

 

In addition to her flute classical background, she has gained experience in a diversity of styles; gospel, jazz, Latin, pop, and general improvisation. She’s worked as a sought after jazz flutist in the south and west side of Chicago and worked as a full-time music director at two of the most prominent multiethnic churches in Chicago. 

 

Yaocheng has had 15 years of teaching experience. She has taught in the award winning band programs at James Logan High School (CA), Marian Catholic High School (IL), and British International School of Chicago. She's worked at the Robin Fellow University of Wisconsin - Whitewater summer camps for multiple seasons. She's currently teaching in the Los Angeles - Orange County area and welcoming new enrollment (see here)! She has students that has embarked onto successful careers in the flute and beyond. She loves to think creatively with the student and believes that the best way to learn is playful learning.

Teaching

Hi! So wonderful to find you here. There is so much to explore in the world of music. Learning music really can be a great addition to life. It is a rewarding experience. It boosts one’s confidence, improves mathematic functions, and also can enhance emotional expressions. One-on-one instruction enables the students to excel exponentially more as compared to solely self taught through online sources.

 

What you will be participating in when you taking lessons with me: 

 - Annual Performance recitals 

 - Quarterly Studio Classes

 - Help and Guidance on instrument selection

 - Preparation for competitions, regional music association annual               testing and State Honor Band auditions. 

 - Letters of Recommendation 

 - Pianist recommendation and pairing for performances and recordings

We will set goals to improve on tone, technique, repertoire expansion, and interpretation of pieces. 

Lessons are set up in increments of 45 min and 60 min. Please inquire/message for rates. Due to Covid-19, covid protocols are determined by state and local county guidelines. You have an option to meet via Zoom or in person.
